Common Dental Emergencies in Children

Broken Tooth

Broken teeth can happen for various reasons, including biting down on something hard, falling, or being hit in the face or mouth. If a tooth breaks, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Then, call our dental office to schedule an appointment.

At your appointment, our dentist will examine the broken tooth and take X-rays to determine the extent of the damage. Our dentist may repair the tooth with a filling or crown, depending on the severity of the break. In some cases, a broken tooth may need to be extracted.

Toothache

A toothache is a sign that something is wrong with your teeth or gums. If your child is experiencing pain, you should call our dentist immediately to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, you can rinse their mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of their cheek to reduce swelling. You can also give them an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen to help ease the pain.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, it is essential to act quickly. First, locate the tooth and rinse it off gently with water. However, do not scrub the tooth or use soap, which can damage the roots. If possible, try to put the tooth back in its socket. If not, place it in a milk container and bring it to the dentist’s office.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies in Children?

Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, including children. While accidents do happen, there are things you can do to help prevent them.

Practicing good oral hygiene habits at home is the best way to avoid dental emergencies. This includes brushing twice daily, flossing daily, and eating a healthy diet. You should also ensure your child visits the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

If your child does experience a dental emergency, staying calm and acting quickly are essential. The first step is to call our dentist right away. Dr. Jyoti can assess the situation and determine what treatment is needed.

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, but knowing how to handle them calmly and seeking immediate dental care is vital for your child's oral health and well-being.
